With one hour left in the FIFA ultimatum, a looming threat of a FIFA suspension; the Nigerian President Jonathan Goodluck Climbed down from his stance, to suspend the Super Eagles for two years .
This Move though popular with majority of Nigerians, it was obvious that the administration did not consult the FIFA rule book before making the decision.
Had the Government done so they would have realized that FIFA would not allow any internal political interference in the matters of a National team.
However moves within the Nigerian football body made it possible for the President to find a fall back position.
The resent Impeachment of the NFF president Lulu would have gone a long way to ease the pain of the reversal.
in a statement from the presidents office, “The Nigerian Football Federation at a meeting with President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan today tendered unreserved apology to the President and the Nigerian people on the dismal performance of the country’s football team, the Super Eagles, at the World Cup appearance. They also informed the President of their decision to disband the team, and address the numerous shortcomings evident in the management of football in Nigeria.”
The NFF assured the President of their commitment to improve the performance and conditions of the National football team
